Three Mills Bakery X Anglicare

Over the coming months, we’re looking forward to sharing with you the stories of wonderful people who work, volunteer and use the services at Anglicare.

As volunteer week comes to an end, we would love to highlight Pat, one of Anglicare’s wonderful volunteers!

“After my in-laws lost their house in the 2003 bushfires, we also lost dad to parkinsons and then mum was diagnosed with cancer. We received a lot of help during that time period when everything was going on, so in the end I decided to give back through volunteering.

If it wasn’t for this place, I don’t think I would be coping at all, I’ve worked since I was 15 years old. You don’t just suddenly stop working, so I’m here a lot.

I run the play group because I love kids and I do the pantry as well. One of my directors used to say Pat, you’re the nurturing one. All I ever wanted to be was a mum. That’s why I think I also got into childcare and where I am now.

With the play group, I run it like a childcare. I try to encourage them to do the right thing. It’s just getting them ready for when they go to school. I do all the activities and set it all up, but I like the fact that you encourage the parents to do an activity with their child.

Play group is free, but we put a donation tin out. And when we have our community days I have a craft table and I raise money that way. There is a little bit of funding but not a lot. I know we have a lot of clients that can’t afford it, so without all the generous people and all their donations we wouldn’t be coping.

The pantry can get very busy. Sometimes it can be emotional for some clients as they’ve waited a long time to come in because they feel like they’re going to be judged. We don’t judge anybody.

The people and helping is what makes me want to stay involved, it’s worthwhile. It costs you a little bit of time but doesn’t cost you any money, and a smile to a client who is upset can change their day.

One day I won’t be able to do it anymore but I think by then I will have felt that I’ve given back and that’s why I do it, just to give back.”

Together with Anglicare, we’ve curated a selection of products that will provide nourishing meals and delicious treats for people who really need it. If you would like to donate, follow the link below. We’ll be matching every donation!
