Sourdough and Sunshine: TMB’s Path To Solar

Three Mills Bakery Solar Panel Installation

Climate change is no joke. The more we learn about its impact on the food system we rely on, the more we are compelled to take action.

We’ve always admired companies who balance purpose, quality and sustainability. Since we began in 2016 we’ve felt a pull to do our bit for the environment, but our progress was never enough to talk about.

That was until we covered our entire roof space with solar panels!

Let’s be frank: operating two state of the art bakeries means we chew through a few kilowatts of power. So the idea of adding solar panels into the mix was a no-brainer. Both sites had large roofs getting hit with consistent sun and it made sense to put to good use.

Last year we covered the entire roof with panels at our Newcastle Street facility. This year our Leeton Street location also had a 99kw system installed.

Combined, there are over 400 panels which came at a heavy investment, but a worthy one.

Here are some early stats:

  • On a sunny day the panels generate a massive 65% of our energy demands.
  • To date, we’ve prevented 55,780kg of CO2 emissions, which is the same as planting over 1000 trees.

There’s much more to get done on our sustainability journey, but we do allow ourselves a few fist pumps every month we get new stats.
