THE DISH: Roy Jr.

When you walk through the doors of Canberra cafe Roy Jr, before you notice the monumental architecture and before you have drooled over the menu, you’ll be struck by the service.

The prompt and attentive staff are ready and waiting to greet you with a smile, usher you to your table and let you know their recommended dishes.

It’s apparent from your first interaction with the team at Roy Jr., that the three co-owners Nicholas, Aulia and Ilham are deeply embedded in the day to day running of the cafe and that their attention to detail permeates the whole experience.

This trio of owners are so involved you will see them on the tools (that’s what we call being hands on in the hospitality biz). Behind the counter Nic is master barista and front of house manager and in the kitchen, Aulia and Ilham are whipping up Roy Jr.’s delightful dishes.

For this team, it’s the Canberra community that makes it all worth it.

“The Canberra community’s openness to new experiences is truly remarkable. This receptiveness to explore new flavors and revisiting classic favorites with a twist speaks volumes about the vibrant and dynamic culture of Canberra.” says co-owner Ilham.

Always ready to feed adventurous Canberrans, the menu holds its own amongst the best in Canberra.

“Whether it’s a reimagined old favourite or a fresh, daring combination of tastes, the essence lies in creating food that’s both seriously good and reliably replicable on a large scale. Roy Jr’s vision is to make exceptional dining an everyday affair for everyone.” says Ilham.

And that’s where today’s dish comes in. Roy Jrs. Chilli Scramble Eggs with cashew cream and cashew crumbs is an absolute banger of a way to start the day.

The scrambled eggs sit as an impressive swirl atop the Three Mills Bakery sourdough. The chilli jam is sweet with the perfect chilli buzz. The jam lightly dresses the eggs with additional jam on the side so you can have as much or little chilli as you like. The garlicky cashew cream is the perfect umami accompaniment that balances the sweet chiili and the cashew crumb adds pops of crunch which completes the textural story of the dish.

Ilham says, “Developing the dish was a process of deciding how to serve chilli eggs, without going too far”.

And in our opinion they’ve nailed it.

We normally only talk about one dish in our partner feature but we couldn’t wrap this up without a shout out for the incredible sandwiches on display. We might be a little bit biased seeing as they are on Three Mills sourdough but boy these are an enticing offering. The flavours are classics like chicken with cheddar, roquette, tomato and pesto aioli and the fillings are stacked high, you’ll definitely walk away full and happy from a feed on one of these sangers.
